Sorry this didn’t help. Thanks for your feedback. I was trying to upgrade my parent’s Gateway ZX this weekend Jul 2, I was trying to get it done before the ‘free upgrade period’ expired.
Their Gateway is running Windows 7 Home Premium. First attempt to upgrade culminated in the screen that showed ‘installing new features and drivers’ complete. Then the computer rebooted and Blank screen forever. After a hard reboot, the computer attempted to load windows 10 and rebooted a couple more times before displaying that it is going to revert back to Windows 7.
I researched the issue and found several threads. Every one of them had replies by folks suggesting a fix to the problem.
None of them said that they had a Gateway ZX, or even that their ‘fix’ would work! It was all ‘try this, read this’ type of advice. Sorry, but I don’t need advice like that. One of them even recommended that you repartition your hard drive with no guarantee that it would work!
That’s crazy talk. None of them ever said that their recommendation worked on anything, much less a Gateway ZX Well, here’s what worked for me on an actual Gateway ZX Follow the normal download process and execute installation process for Windows When you reach the screen with the radio buttons that gives you a choice to install updates and updated drivers, DON’T! It says it is recommended, but don’t do it.
When I checked the radio button that does not install updated drivers, the installation continued past the second phase and finished the installation like a champ. My parents are up and running on Windows 10 on their Gateway ZX If others have come across this same problem and followed the same solution, I wish they would have posted it so we wouldn’t have to listen to unproven theories and referring us to useless articles.
Just found this.. When rebooted.. I cannot remember the exact sequence of events, but at one point during the install, a screen appears with two radio buttons to click. One is for installing updates and updating drivers. Do not select that button. I can attest that my parents Gateway ZX did upgrade to Win 10 and it is working just fine.
I can also tell you that the compatibility test that Microsoft performs on your computer said that Win 10 was available for it and it would be compatible.
I think maybe because I have a couple of Win Updates that have failed to install..? I’m down to one left so I’m hoping. If you don’t mind.. And what, if anything, you did before-hand..
I’d sure appreciate it.. I don’t know if our situations are similar, but my parent’s Gateway had some failed Win Updates as well. That’s why I drove across Texas to help them get it updated before the Jul 29th deadline. Before I visited them, I downloaded the “tool to create installation media” from the following link and loaded it all on a USB. I selected the bit version of Windows 10 Home. I don’t think I really needed the USB, but it did save time that would have been spent waiting for downloading the install package multiple times.
I had tried about 4 times to install it over a period of two days before I tried the option of not updating the drivers. I am not a computer technician, but I think what happened during the failed attempts was that during the install process, windows updated a video or graphics driver for the gateway and that caused the blank screen. I didn’t do anything to the computer before-hand. I left the failed Win 7 updates alone because I figured that Win 10 would overwrite Win 7 code regardless.
Hope you get it working. I was sooo frustrated for two days and my parents could see that I was really trying to help them. You are SO awesome!! Thank you thank you thank you. You just answered every question I still had, and described every problem I’ve been having. I’ve got 24hrs before I get ready to drive across Texas lol..
